dog walking code

When walking in The New Forest with your dog it is important to remember to treat the forest with care – you can do this by following the dog walkers’ code. We request that anyone enjoying the beautiful forest with their dogs to:

  • Pick up after your dog wherever you are, especially where people walk, play, park or picnic.
  • Keep your dog close to you and in sight at all times - if necessary use a lead.
  • Keep well away from any work taking place and observe warning signage.
  • Keep your dog from jumping up at or approaching other people, especially children
  • Keep dogs away from picnics, horse riders and cyclists, and prevent excessive barking
  • Show respect for other dogs (especially timid ones); if an approaching dog is on a lead, put yours on a lead too
  • If you cannot reliably and quickly call your dog back to you and away from people or other dogs, please keep it on a lead.

dog friendly attractions

There are lots of dog friendly attractions in The New Forest from the New Forest Centre in Lyndhurst to Exbury Gardens. Take a look at our Dog Information Discover Mini Guide for more details as well as contacts for vets and kennels should you need them whilst you are on holiday.

dog friendly pubs

Take a break after your exhilarating walk at any one of our dog friendly pubs; let the dog stretch out in front of the fire whilst you tuck into a delicious and hearty lunch. Don't forget your Brand New Forest Card as there are lots of money saving offers from pubs around the area.

birds

About a quarter of birds in the New Forest nest and raise their chicks on the ground, so from the 1st of March to the 31st of July dogs must be kept on a short lead on common and downland. Failure to do so will breech the Countryside and Rights of Way Act (2000). There are a variety of diferent birds in the New Forest, to find out more information then please click here.

wildlife

All deer have a strong scent which can often arouse the instinct to hunt in dogs. We ask that you take this into consideration when walking your dog especially in spring & early summer due to the pregnant females and young fawns, as these are most vulnerable. New Forest ponies, cattle, donkeys and pigs are also free to roam around the forest, to ensure your safety at all times and make sure your dog is close by or on a lead.
