About a quarter of birds in the New Forest nest and raise their chicks on the ground, so from the 1st of March to the 31st of July dogs must be kept on a short lead on common and downland. Failure to do so will breech the Countryside and Rights of Way Act (2000). There are a variety of diferent birds in the New Forest, to find out more information then please take a visit to the Visitor Information Centre in Lyndhurst.
All deer have a strong scent which can often arouse the instinct to hunt in dogs. We ask that you take this into consideration when walking your dog especially in spring & early summer due to the pregnant females and young fawns, as these are most vulnerable. New Forest ponies, cattle, donkeys and pigs are also free to roam around the forest, to ensure your safety at all times and make sure your dog is close by or on a lead.
