About the forest

NFTA and other partners

Here you will find those bodies closely associated to preserving the forest and keeping it special for generations to come.

NFTA was formed in 1989 to work in partnership with NFDC to promote the New Forest as a quality year-round holiday and business destination. NFTA recognises the need to preserve and protect the natural beauty of this sensitive and unique area of England and works with other agencies to ensure that visitors understand the special nature of the area.

New Forest Tourism Association (NFTA) is a Trade Association with members drawn from all tourism related businesses. Formed in 1989 membership has steadily grown and now exceeds 230.

NFTA works in partnership with New Forest District Council (NFDC) and together jointly market the New Forest as a year-round holiday and business destination. NFTA provides an interactive forum for members with involvement at all levels.

National Park Authority

The New Forest National Park was created in 2005 and took up its full powers in April 2006.

Its purposes are:

  • To conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Park, and

  • To promote understanding and enjoyment of its special qualities

It is the eighth national park in England (or ninth including the Broads Authority, which has status equivalent to a national park), the first in the south-east of England and the first to be created for nearly 50 years.

The National Park lies mainly in south-west Hampshire – from east of the Avon Valley to Southampton Water and from the Solent coast to the edge of the Wiltshire chalk downs.

The New Forest has long been recognised as a special and important area that needs protection.    National Park designation means the strongest possible level of protection for the future which is especially important in the south and south-east where development and recreation pressures are intense and on the increase.

The New Forest Trust

The New Forest is a very special place. We are determined to keep it that way. The New Forest Trust is a new organisation with one simple aim – to secure the future of the New Forest for those who live in it and for those who love it, now and in the future. We plan to do this by galvanising financial support locally and from the millions of people who visit the area every year. This support will fund vital projects that cannot be funded through existing channels. Our efforts will complement and build on those of the many established organisations already working towards this shared goal. But to do all of this we need your help.
