Pub Walks in The New Forest - Walk The Queens Head, Burley
The perfect place to start a walk! It began outside the Queens Head Pub and up a sharp hill, which certainly worked off that last round of local cider. The route took a right towards the Moorhill House Hotel and followed a long drive surrounded by grand woodland, it really felt that we had entered the forest! Making our way up the steep drive to the hotel we noticed some charming cottages and a few ponies .
We headed down a winding path before locating a gap in the hedges at the bottom of a steep slope, this route certainly had you looking out for the next access point or marker. Many parts of this route had you climbing through gaps or fumbling over mounds and then you would be back onto paved road. This added adventure made the route even more worthwhile, but not too arduous. We crossed over and walked up a country lane admiring the beautiful landscape which accommodated several idyllic cottages.
Next on the route was a woodland walk which led us to a breathtaking view of the heath land. The path took us out on to the moor where we could see over the Forest for miles and not another car, person or building was in sight. It was a truly memorable sight that highlighted the Forest’s natural beauty that very few people actually get out of their cars and see. The true forest really has to be found on foot.
Overall I found this to be a rewarding and easy to follow trail that I would do again, however I know that the forest holds so many more trails, with many more magic moments that you can only find on foot.
Next time though, I might not have that last round!
