Lyndhurst - The home of the girl behind Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”

Located in the New Forest, Lyndhurst is a large and beautiful village packed with activities to do and places to see. From art galleries and museums to local shops and restaurants, there’s a variety of ways to spend your time here for people of all ages.

Lovers of literature will be pleased to know that this quaint village was once the home of Alice Hargreaves (born Liddell); the inspiration behind Lewis Carroll’s much loved children’s novel "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland".

Lewis Carroll based his novel on a young Alice Liddell, during a rowing trip in Oxford Carroll told Alice and some of her siblings the story of the young girl who goes looking for an adventure and ends up in Wonderland. Alice Liddell who loved the story so much, asked Carroll to write it down for her and the rest they say is history, Alice in Wonderland is a timeless classic for all of the family to enjoy.

St Michaels & All Angels Church in Lyndhurst is the burial ground for Alice’s ashes when she passed away in 1934 and is one of the many places that reference both her life and the book itself. To further immerse yourself in the story, why not visit the exhibition at the New Forest Centre to gain a further insight into the captivating universe, you can even see Alice’s original looking glass!

Alternatively if you fancy a bite to eat, a delicious tea party can be found at the Mad Hatter Tearooms which is based around the iconic moment where Alice first encounters the Hatter.
