With the sun shining (most of the time!), bright flora and fauna making the forest look even more beautiful and so much fun to be had by everyone, May Half Term is one of the most perfect times to visit the New Forest – whether a day trip, or for a couple of days or the whole week, there is plenty to do, see and discover while you’re here!

Or stay beneath the stars, within the nature, on a camping trip! Camping in the Forest provide 10 of the many campsites in the New Forest – all of which are different sizes and locations, however the most popular sites for family camping (great for May Half Term) are Hollands Wood – which is in a prime position in the forest, Holmsley – which is close to the beach and also next to miles of cycling and walking tracks, there is also there is a children’s play area on site, and the other popular campsite is Ashurst – this is particularly perfect for families being nearby attractions including Peppa Pig World, Longdown Activity Farm and the New Forest Wildlife Park.

Another great holiday choice for families are our wonderful Holiday Parks! We are spoilt here in the New Forest with fantastic Holiday Parks dotted all around the forest. With onsite entertainment, restaurants and activities, some even have their own swimming pools, Holiday Parks are a great place to enjoy a break away this May Half Term!

If you’re looking for a quieter, more low key, escape to the forest, perhaps a Self Catering break is what you are looking for? With properties being able to sleep from 2 to 16 people, Self Catering breaks are great for a romantic break and also a great way to get the whole family together! Forester’s and Keeper’s Cottages are beautiful cottages that both sleep 4 persons and they are still available & have some great prices for a week break starting from 24th May – Forester’s at £735 and Keeper’s at £826. There are also loads of amazing Bed & Breakfasts that you can stay at in the New Forest too. Whether it is a traditional B&B in the middle of the forest, or a more modern place close to the seaside, we will be sure to have the perfect place for you.

As well as fantastic accommodation offers, there are also so many events and things to do in the New Forest this May Half Term. Our attractions are great places to join in with some fun this half term, with most of them holding specific May Half Term events for everyone to get involved in!

When the sun is out and shining this May Half Term, Hurst Castle is the place to be! Young visitors to Hurst Castle between 25th May and 2nd June can become a ‘D-Day Hero’ as part of its celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Map plotting skills will be tested as visitors find letters around the castle in a Battleship-style ‘HIT OR MISS’ activity trail! The activity is included in the castle admission price and there is a ferry service to the castle from Keyhaven daily from 10.15am.

Buckler’s Hard is also holding a special event for the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings this Half Term. Their Model Boats D-Day Re-Enactment will be a display showing model warships dodging explosions on the water, with a replica Normandy village and there will also be pyrotechnics, remote control boats and miniature tanks! You can also join them for the rest of the Half Term on one of their living history tours & river cruises.

Just down the road from Buckler’s Hard you can train to be a secret agent at Beaulieu, where you can completing cunning challenges to follow in the footsteps of the World War II agents of the Special Operations Executive – adopting authentic agent skills of observation and problem solving, using codes to decipher secret messages, learning about rations and graduating as a fully-trained SOE agent!

There’s also loads of fantastic events and shows happening at Longdown Activity Farm this half-term, as well as the usual fun including looking at, cuddling or feeding loads of cute farm animals! Our friends from the New Forest Vintage Tractor Club are back at the Farm on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th May! Crazy M is back on Wednesday 29th May for some balloon-twisting fun and you will also have the opportunity to meet wonderful local author and illustrator Simon Chadwick at the farm on Friday 31st May, where you can enjoy his story time, drawing, junk modelling & more (suitable for age 5 and over).

Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum will be running a Motorcycle Alphabet Quiz for 6 years and older and they will also have their Teddy Bear Hunt for any age, but particularly under 5’s. On completion of each activity every child will receive a certificate and a postcard.

Visit Furzey Gardens this May half term and take part in their children’s half term fun activity where you can make your own living miniature garden, perfect for elves and fairies! Create the garden by planting small plants, arranging some natural decorations and painting some small ceramic decorations to go in the garden. On Saturday 25th May at 6.30pm, Furzey Gardens are also showing a unique performance from cycling theatre group The Handlebards. Their all-male troupe will be performing a bicycle-powered production of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" like none other. Expect riotous amounts of energy, a fair whack of chaos, and a great deal of laughter at this enchanting New Forest venue. Tickets £16 for general admission, £10 for children aged 10 – 18.

If indoor activities are more your thing, why not book tickets for one of the children’s showings or events at Hanger Farm Arts Centre? On Tuesday 28th May you can enjoy a relaxed showing of Beauty & the Beast, or book onto something different with the Land of Nod a starlight adventure - a blend of intricate puppetry, captivating storytelling also with an enchanting musical score - on Wednesday 29th May. Hanger Farm Arts Centre are also giving you the chance to learn amazing circus skills on Friday 31st May!

Other fantastic indoor activities will be happening at the New Forest Heritage Centre at their Half Term Discovery Days on Tuesday 28th and Thursday 30th May from 10-4. With exciting craft activities, quizzes and Museum trails, these family friendly Discovery Days will help you learn about the New Forest whilst having fun! Museum entry is free, craft activities by donation and there is no need to book!

For a more relaxed indoor activity, head to The Regal Cinema in Fordingbridge, where you can fall back in love with the cutest robot in film, Wall-E, in the showing on Saturday 25th May at 2.30pm, or sing along to the amazing Disney musical of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, showing on Saturday 1st June at 2.30pm! Just outside of the New Forest you will find multi award-winning theme park, Adventure Wonderland, where on 29th May we see the return of PAW Patrol’s fearless police and traffic cop, Chase, who will join forces with construction expert friend, Rubble. They’ll be making personal appearances at intervals throughout the day. So, bring your camera or phone to capture the magic! Paultons Park, Home of Peppa Pig World is also now bigger and better than ever before and is the perfect place to head for a fun-filled day out this May Half Term!

A little further outside of the New Forest is Marwell Zoo and you don’t want to miss BRIKOSAURS! A world exclusive, prehistoric LEGO® brick experience that will see 50 astonishing dinosaur sculptures, including the biggest ever move-able LEGO brick dinosaur model – a whopping 8 metre T-Rex! Created by LEGO brick building company Bright Bricks, BRIKOSAURS is sure to excite LEGO and dinosaur enthusiasts alike. BRIKOSAURS is at Marwell Zoo until September, however there are some extra displays and activities at the BRIKOSAURS Base Camp for May Half Term, including fun souvenir photo opportunities in the new LEGO brick dino jeep and a brand new display where you can guess the number of dinosaurs to win a LEGO set worth up to £40!

Head to New Forest Activities in Beaulieu, and choose from one of their exciting adventure day packages!  Explore the New Forest by boat and bike on a Family Adventure Day (this includes a 90-minute canoeing tour on the Beaulieu River and a full day’s bike hire). Or adventure in the forest on a Woodland Adventure Day, jam-packed with woodland activities including Bushcraft, Archery and High Rope challenges on their treetop playground. Or why not drop the kids off on a Holiday Adventure Day instead? Same woodland activities but just for the kids – blowing school holiday clubs out of the water!

As well as these events, attractions and activities – we highly suggest getting out on your bikes (or hire some) or put on your walking boots and go and explore the wonderful New Forest. There are over 140 miles of off-road tracks to follow and so much beautiful wildlife and nature to discover – did you know we also have 40 miles of ‘secret’ coast for you to explore too?
