British artists have excelled at printmaking, using wood engraving, linocut, lithography and etching to create inspiring and innovative artworks. A new exhibition at St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery shows that this tradition is still flourishing. It brings together the work of eight leading British printmakers who combine artistry, technique and imagination to produce stunning contemporary imagery. To match Lymington's location between sea and Forest the exhibition focuses on visions of coast and countryside.
The exhibition features wood engravings, etchings, linocuts and lithographs; all hand-printed in limited editions by the artists. All these works will be available for sale making this an excellent opportunity to acquire high quality affordable art.
Jo Barry is based near Ringwood and takes the beauty of the New Forest as her main inspiration. Neil Bousfield is a leading wood engraver whose prints combine coastal landscapes and abstract patterning. Merlyn Chesterman likes to work on a large scale and her stunning woodblock prints capture the movement of wind and waves.
Melvyn Evans' abstracted landscapes echo the coast-inspired art of the St Ives School. Phil Greenwood uses etching and aquatint to capture the effect of moon and sun on the English countryside. Flora McLachlan employs a variety of methods to transform the forest into a place of mystery and legend. Howard Phipps' exquisite wood engravings celebrate the landscapes of Dorset and Wiltshire. Matt Underwood focuses on the everyday beauty of flowers, birds and butterflies in colourful woodblock prints.
The gallery is also delighted to welcome local artists Katherine Anteney, Sian Appleyard, Pete Durnell, Aimee Durnell, Victoria Garland and Anne Hayward who show that there is lots of exciting artwork being produced in the heart of Hampshire and the New Forest today.
St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery is open Monday - Saturday, 10am - 4pm
