Exhibition: D Day Lepe Heritage Group

The D Day Lepe Heritage Group will be exhibiting a fascinating range of documents, images and models related to D-Day and Lepe's significant role in this historical event.

The Group's aim is to identify, document, record and conserve detailed information of events at Lepe, Hampshire, relating to D-Day, on 6th June 1944, and to exhibit and share the results to inform, educate, promote and maintain interest in Lepe's heritage.

The Group is a small band of keen volunteers, supported by professional historians and archaeologists.

It grew out of the Lepe Country Park's Heritage Steering Group. It concentrates upon, researches and presents elements of Lepe's D-Day history by compiling and preparing the results. Our intention is to make them accessible to all through the use of social media, the Group's website (www.ddaylepe.org.uk), virtual presentations and some static exhibitions.

There are many superbly researched and written books, volumes of historical documentation and many excellent websites and museums dealing both generally with D-Day and with particular topics in the run up to, on and subsequent to D-Day, on 6th June 1944.

We do not try to emulate them, but hope to add greater detail to the role played by Lepe, except where inclusion of other locations is pertinent to a relevant topic.

The Lepe area has a very long and distinguished history timeline. Full details are to be found on website https://nfknowledge.org and the Historical Character Report dated 2021 within it.

The activities on and around Lepe and Stanswood made significantly bigger contributions to the success of Operation Neptune, and in turn its role within Operation Overlord, than could be expected from a relatively small and generally unrecognised location.

Generations of local families and visitors enjoy the Lepe area, Lepe Country Park and the New Forest National Park. Many of these are particularly interested in or connected with events surrounding D-Day and WW2 more generally.
