Southampton's Sugar House

About

Southampton's 18th century Sugar House was built within the ruins of a Franciscan Friary. Its later uses included a granary, hospital, and store before it was destroyed by World War Two bombing.

This talk by archaeologist Matt Garner considers the reasons for locating a Sugar House in Southampton and the processes that took place within its walls. Evidence from maps, documents, and archaeological excavation are used to understand the building's unhappy history.

Talks are held in the John Chandler Activity Room in the Visitor Centre, and are suitable for 16+ years. Please buy tickets in advance: in person or via our website.

The Mill Cafe will be open from 6.30pm for tea, coffee, cake.
