Longer days, warmer weather, and wild beauty all around - summer is one of the most unforgettable times to visit the New Forest. From sea swimming to wildlife spotting, forest picnics to foodie delights, here are our top ten ways to make the most of the season.

1. Watch wildlife roam free
Summer is the season when the New Forest comes alive with it's incredible array of wildlife. Free-roaming ponies, donkeys and cattle graze the heathland, deer gather in shady glades, and birdsong fills the air. You might even spot one of the UK's native reptiles who all live here, or catch a glimpse of a fox or buzzard on the wing. Just remember: always admire animals from a distance and never feed or touch them - help us protect their freedom by following the New Forest Code.
2. See the New Forest in full colour
The New Forest in summer is a palette of pure joy - think bright blue skies, vivid green ferns and golden grasses, and, later in the season, carpets of purple heather. Evenings are painted with glowing pinks and oranges as the sun sets over the treetops. Nature’s putting on a show - don’t forget your camera!

3. Explore picture-perfect villages
Our towns and villages are packed with character - each one unique, but all brimming with charm. Wander down pretty high streets, pop into independent shops, visit historic quaysides, and stop for cream tea or ice cream along the way. Lyndhurst, Lymington, Hythe, Brockenhurst, Beaulieu, Burley and beyond are all worth exploring.
4. Enjoy a picnic under the trees
Stock up at a local farm shop - cheese, chutney, juicy strawberries - and find your perfect picnic spot. Whether it’s a shady woodland clearing or a sunny heathland view with ponies in the distance, summer is made for lazy lunches on a blanket. Don’t forget your reusable cutlery and rubbish bag!

5. Make a splash at the coast
With over 40 miles of coastline, the New Forest is full of unexpected beach day delights. Paddle at Milford on Sea, skim stones at Barton on Sea or soak up the sea air at Lepe and Calshot. These shores are quieter than most - perfect for unwinding or taking in the views of the Isle of Wight.
6. Try watersports with a view
It's watersports galore in the New Forest. Canoe or kayak along the peaceful Beaulieu River, paddleboard at sunset, or take a sailing lesson on the Solent. For adrenaline seekers, there’s wakeboarding and water skiing too. Local centres offer lessons, tours and gear hire - just bring your sense of adventure.

7. Dine outside, Forest-style
Make the most of the sunshine and book a table in one of the New Forest’s many outdoor spaces. From sunny pub gardens to serene hotel terraces, it’s the season for alfresco dining. Fresh seafood, woodfired pizzas, local produce - whatever your taste, there’s a spot to match.
8. Join a festival or summer event
The New Forest’s summer events calendar is packed. From the famous New Forest Show to food festivals like New Forest Food Festival, dog-friendly events, outdoor theatre and music by starlight, there’s something happening every weekend. Check out our events guide to see what’s on and plan ahead - tickets for some events go fast.

9. Hop on the New Forest Tour Bus
From 5 July to 14 September, take in the best of the National Park from an open-top bus with the New Forest Tour. Three routes wind through woodlands, heathlands, coastline and quaint villages - and you can hop on and off as you please. It’s a relaxed, scenic way to explore.
10. Fill your days with adventure
There’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the great outdoors here, with so many excellent activities and attractions for everyone to get involved in. Try axe-throwing, archery, treetop challenges or family bike rides. Visit adventure farms, peaceful gardens or historical houses. Whether you’re with kids, friends or flying solo, the New Forest makes summer unforgettable.

However you choose to spend your time, summer in the New Forest is about connecting - with nature, with others, and with the moment. So slow down, soak it up, and make some lasting memories.
