As the colours begin to change, September brings us into the early autumn, arguably the most beautiful time of year in the New Forest. Take advantage of the cooler days and step into our stunning landscape as the rich oranges, reds and gold hues slowly begin to transform our canopy.

Take advantage of some seasonal forest experiences

September is an amazing time to enjoy some seasonal forest experiences. From laid-back bike rides through the forest to horse riding across the heathland. September also sees the start of one of the New Forest’s traditions, pannage. Pannage is when the commoners (who own some of the land of the forest) can release pigs into the landscape. These pigs will search for, and eat, fallen acorns. Acorns are poisonous to many species of animal, including our iconic New Forest Ponies. This year, pannage is due to start from Monday 15 September. See if you can spot any of the pigs on your travels.

Plan a pub walk

Is there anything better than taking a walk followed by some good old traditional grub and a drink? Make the most of the fine weather and plan some New Forest walks this September. Take a look at the pub walks we have on offer and pick from coastal jaunts to village loops. With walks available whether you are looking for a short stroll or a more challenging adventure.

Quiter times to visit

With many of the schools returning in early September, some of our more family-oriented attractions will be that much quieter. Now’s a great time to check out the rides at Paultons Park without the big queues or to explore the exhibitions at Beaulieu without the hullabaloo of the school holidays.

Plan some outdoor adventures, perfect for two or more adults such as canoeing, archery or even high ropes.

September can also be a great time to invest in your wellbeing. From forest bathing sessions at the gorgeous Furzey Gardens (7 and 9 September) to spa days at some of our luxury New Forest hotels.

Event highlights this month

There’s plenty going on this September in the New Forest. The start of the month will see the tail end of some of the school holiday activities including Summer Garden Games at Exbury Gardens (until 2 September) and Beaulieu’s Summer Holiday Fun (until 5 September). As the schools return, you will find more events suited for adults such as a Vineyard Tour and wine tasting (18 September) and a live music night at exclusively-for-adults campsite, Back of Beyond (13 September).

Catch the remaining few weeks of the Sculpture at Beaulieu exhibition – and perhaps even purchase some artwork as a reminder of your New Forest visit?
